Setup Quality of Service on Linksys Routers

Quality of Service On Linksys Routers Overview

The Linksys router is one of the best wireless routers in the market. In effect, the Linksys router gives you the ability to setup priorities for traffic that pass through the router. For example, you can give high priority to sensitive traffic and assign medium or low priority to other types of traffic. Therefore, traffic requiring high priority such as VoIP, IM, emails, and online games will get more bandwidth than traffic having medium priority, which will get more bandwidth than traffic with low bandwidth. Using a Linksys router , you can manage the QoS according to web surfing, file downloading, sending/receiving emails, or remote access through VPN connections.

Quality of Service Setup Process

  1. Launch your Internet browser program.
  2. In the Address filed, type the IP address 192.168.1.1, and then press Enter.
  3. Type admin for the admin username and password. This is the default setting for a lot of Linksys routers. On the other hand, in some Linksys router versions, you should leave the username field blank and enter admin in the password field.
  4. Click on the Applications & Gaming tab.
  5. Click on QoS.
  6. Click on Enable in order to activate the Quality of Service feature. Otherwise, click on Disable.
  7. For every application, set the suitable QoS priority. The Quality of Service page provides three options: High (traffic can get up to 70% of the bandwidth), Medium (traffic can get up to 15% of the bandwidth), and Low (traffic can get up to 10% of the bandwidth).
  8. If one or more of your applications do not figure out in the current list, then you can setup up to three new applications by adding their port type (TCP, UDP) and port numbers, and then set the Quality of service priority to each of them.
  9. Click on Save Settings.
